All you you need to know about Celine Dion’s rare neurological disorder ‘stiff person syndrome’

Renowned singer Celine Dion recently informed her fans on Instagram that she was suffering from stiff person syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder.

The Canadian singer said she had no choice but to postpone her “Courage” tour, which was to begin in February next year.

As per Associated Press (AP), the singer’s spring 2023 shows have been shifted to 2024 and her summer concerts next year have been called off.

Stiff person syndrome, also known as Moersch-Woltman syndrome, is a progressive neurological disorder that affects one or two in a million people. The condition causes stiffness in muscles and frequent painful muscle spasms

The symptoms of SPS include stiffening of muscles in the torso and limbs, as well as episodes of “violent” muscle spasms, as per Yale Medicine.

The exact cause of SPS is not known. But it has features of an autoimmune disorder, notes the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Doctors prescribe sedatives, muscle relaxants, and steroids to treat patients. Conservative therapies like stretching, heat therapy, aqua therapy, massage therapy, and acupuncture can also help individuals with SPS, as per Barrow Neurological Institute.
