Dengue on the rise:  How to stay safe  from the deadly disease

It is difficult to diagnose dengue based only on physical symptoms and fever, so recognise the warning sign and get tested as soon as possible.

Dehydration during dengue can be deadly. Those suffering from dengue should be given plenty of fluids.

Reducing mosquito breeding grounds is the first line of defence against dengue. Regularly inspect and clean areas with standing water.

Apply mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil.

Use mosquito nets while sleeping and make sure windows and doors have screens to keep mosquitos out of your home.

Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks in mosquito-prone areas to provide an extra layer of protection.

Aedes mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Lessen your activity outside during these hours to reduce the chance of mosquito bites.

Keep up the natural immunity by increasing intake of green leafy vegetables and maintaining a regular exercise schedule.
