Pharma and healthcare Budget 2023
The Department of Pharmaceuticals was created on 1 July, 2008 in the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers with the objective to give greater focus and thrust on the development of the pharmaceutical sector in the country and to regulate various complex issues related to pricing and availability of medicines at affordable prices, research & development, protection of intellectual property rights and international commitments related to the pharmaceutical sector which required integration of work with other Ministries. The Centre is all set to introduce a research-linked incentive programme shaped along the lines of the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to boost research and development of biotech products in the country. PLI scheme aims to give companies incentives on incremental sales from products manufactured in domestic units. In 2020, the government announced a PLI scheme to encourage indigenous manufacturing of critical pharma ingredients.
