Monsoon Eyecare: How to keep eye infections at bay

Do not rub your eyes with dirty hands. Harmful bacteria or viruses on your hands can lead to severe eye infections.

Make a habit of properly washing your hands with soap and water before touching your eyes or applying eye drops or medications.

Be aware of contaminated water during monsoon, as it causes conjunctivitis, corneal infections, or other eye diseases. If you get dirty water in your eyes, quickly rinse them with clean water.

Wear waterproof or wrap-around sunglasses to protect your eyes during heavy rains.

Use adequate cleaning and disinfection measures for contact lenses, and avoid wearing lenses while swimming or in extremely humid circumstances, as this increases the risk of eye infections.

Sharing towels, handkerchiefs, or eye makeup can act as an infection carrier during the monsoon.

Include foods like carrots, spinach, citrus fruits, almonds, and fish in your diet, as they contain essential nutrients that promote healthy eyes. Drinking plenty of water also keeps your eyes moisturised.

Mosquito bites can cause eye-related infections including dengue fever, chikungunya, or malaria, which can have serious ocular consequences. Ensure to keep your surroundings clean.

Inability to walk outside during rains increases screentime, resulting in dry eyes, eye fatigue and blurred vision. Remember to blink frequently, while taking breaks from digital screens.
