The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will get underway on Friday, 31 March, with a clash between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya, emerge into the 2023 edition as defending champions, having clinched their maiden title in their debut season.

Like in 2022, IPL 2023 will feature 10 teams competing for the trophy. The 10 teams are Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Mumbai Indians (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

The 10 teams have been divided into two groups of five. Group A consists of MI, KKR, RR, DC and LSG, while Group B features CSK, RCB, GT, PBKS and SRH.

Like last year, the IPL will be played in India, and this time around, matches will be played across 12 host cities, as the tournament returns to the traditional home and away format. Last year, the league stage matches of the IPL were held in Mumbai and Pune, while Qualifier 1 and Eliminator were held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Qualifier 2 and the final took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Each team will play five teams from the other group twice, and four teams from their own group once. That would make upto 14 league matches per team. A total of 70 matches will be played over 52 days, with the final scheduled to take place on 28 May.

Mumbai Indians remain the most successful franchise in IPL history with five title triumphs, followed by Chennai Super Kings (Four titles). Kolkata Knight Riders have won the tournament two times, while Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans have won it once. The now-defunct Deccan Chargers won one title, with their triumph coming back in 2009.
