Purple Cap / Most Wickets

The distinguished Purple Cap is given to the bowler who takes the most number of wickets in a single season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It was introduced in 2008 with the start of IPL and Pakistan's Sohail Tanvir was its first recipient as he took 22 wickets in 11 matches to guide Rajasthan Royals to the IPL trophy in the inaugural season of the league.

Rajasthan Royals' Yuzvendra Chahal won the Purple Cap last season in 2022 with the help of 27 wickets from 17 matches.

In the history of IPL, only two bowlers — Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Dwayne Bravo — have won the Purple Cap twice. Bravo won the Purple Cap for the first time in 2013 while playing for Chennai Super Kings as he took 32 wickets in 18 matches that season. In 2015, he rewon the Cap, once again while playing for CSK, with the help of 26 wickets from 17 matches.

Bravo also holds the record for taking most wickets in IPL history. He leads the chart with 183 wickets from 161 matches.

Sunrisers Hyderabad's Bhuvneshwar won the Purple Cap back-to-back in 2016 and 2017. He took 23 wickets in 2016 from 17 matches while scalped 26 in 14 games in 2017.

Other winners of Purple Cap include RP Singh (2009), Pragyan Ojha (2010), Lasith Malinga (2011), Morne Morkel (2012), Mohit Sharma (2014), Andrew Tye (2018), Imran Tahir (2019), Kagiso Rabada (2020) and Harshal Patel (2021).

Bravo and Harshal also hold the record for taking the most number of wickets in a season — 32. Harshal achieved the feat in 2021 while Bravo had done so in 2013.
