Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the new Terminal 2 building of Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. Constructed at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, the new terminal will be able to handle around five to six crore of passengers from the current capacity of 2.5 crore. The new building has been nicknamed ‘Terminal in a Garden’.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared glimpses of the new terminal building of KIA on Twitter, saying that it will be an “impetus to airport capacity expansion”. He further said, “I am pleased that the terminal building gives utmost importance to sustainability.” Terminal 2 will be operational from December.
The new design of T2 is meant to portray the city’s older title of ‘Garden City.’ The new terminal building at KIA will feature 10,000 square metres of green walls, hanging gardens and outdoor gardens. A KIA official said, “The T2 is an architectural wonder, which is a first-of-its kind ‘Terminal in a Garden’. It will have lush greenery within and outside and will be a visual delight like no other in the world.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also unveiled a 108-feet tall statue of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru city. The statue has been built in the premises of KIA.
The new terminal building that has over 100 counters will cater to the ever-growing footfall of international passengers at Bengaluru airport. The new terminal will have greater number of counters for check-in and immigration to ensure a smooth travelling experience to passengers.
The new terminal has been built on the same principles of sustainability as before. Terminal 2 uses 100 per cent renewable energy across its campus and has been called an ‘eco-friendly’ terminal. The use of bamboo throughout the terminal is extensive.
